When Two Become One: How To Transition Into Living With Your Significant Other & Sharing Space

Rob Marchese

When it comes to big life decisions, deciding to move in with your partner is one that is towards the top. While the prospect of co-habitating with the one you love is exciting, it also comes with a lot of baggage, and we mean that both literally and figuratively! From merging what was once solely your things into things that now belong to the both of you, to making compromises about deciding what stays and what goes, to everything else that comes with moving in together, there’s a lot to consider before, during, and after the moving in together process.

To avoid as many potential hiccups as possible, take a look at these suggestions for keeping your relationship working out when moving in together and sharing space.

Set Some Ground Rules
Figure out who likes to do what, and what each other’s strengths/weaknesses are. If one of you enjoys doing the dishes, and the other likes to keep track of the finances, divvy up the various household responsibilities based off of that. Then, for the tasks that no one is jumping up and down for, compromise and have each of you take on one responsibility that isn’t so fun.

Measure It Out
Before you start piling your things and your partner’s things into your new shared space, get out that tape measure and start measuring your living quarters so you know what you are working with, and the larger things that you need to fit into the space. That way you have a good idea of what is going to fit where and what you don’t have room for.

Get Rid Of Doubles
There’s no reason to have multiples of things lying around the house or apartment taking up valuable space. Compare the various appliances, books, electronics, etc. that you and your significant other both have and figure out which ones are best to keep. Then donate the doubles or put them into storage!

Invest In Outside Storage
Speaking of storage, even after you’ve gone through your things and purged what you could, there are most likely still going to be things that you want to hold onto, though perhaps not in your place. For those items, renting some storage space is the perfect solution. With full service storage solutions like  Zippboxx , you can schedule a pick-up of the items you need stored and they will come pick-up, store and deliver back your items when requested. It’s easy, convenient and takes the stress out of the storage process. Plus, you’ve just moved in with your SO, do you really need anymore stress added on top of that?!

Create Solo Spaces
Everyone needs to have some “me time” every now and again and it is especially important when you live with someone else. Be sure that in your new place you set-up areas of comfort that speak and cater to you individually. Do you love DIY and crafting? Then set-up a craft table! Do you enjoy curling up with a book? Designate a quiet reading nook! Like to unwind by playing video games? Arrange a gaming spot!

Go Out When You Can
It’s easy to get overwhelmed with your living space/situation, so be sure to get out of your element every once in awhile by going out and having some fun! Whether that fun is meeting up with some friends for a drink, going out to eat at a new restaurant with your partner, or going for a walk through some local hiking trails, do what you need to do to keep your sanity while navigating the waters of co-habitating.
