Bookworm Organization: Different Ways To Design Your Bookshelf & Store Your Books

Rob Marchese

If you’re someone who considers themself to be a bibliophile, then in all likeliness you have a decent sized book collection. Placed on shelves, stacked up in piles on the floor, and strewn on different tables, books take up space not only in our hearts and minds, but in our homes as well. This makes it all the more pressing to have a particular place to put all of your books, and a systematic one at that!

Get creative and keep your shelf organized (and looking fine!) with these bookshelf design and book storage ideas!

By Author
This may seem fairly obvious, but one way to organize your books is ordering them alphabetically by the author’s name. This manner of positioning them will ensure that you quickly find another book by an author that you know you already like. Then, once you have the books arranged alphabetically by the author’s name, you can also organize each group of an author’s books alphabetically by their title. It’ll be doubly categorized and organized!

By Title
The next most apparent way to organize your books, following by author’s name, is by book title. You’ll never have trouble finding a specific book when your bookshelf is setup this way!

By Color
A super fun, interior design driven way to organize your bookshelf is by color. Not only is it pleasing to look at, it’s especially useful for people who are better at visualizing things and relate things back to color. The rainbow bookshelf is a huge book lover trend happening on Instagram. Pictured below are the color coordinated bookshelves of Instagram users  @gatheredstardust  and  @ivanka_roberts .

These are just two of the many beautiful bookshelves categorized under the  #rainbowbookshelf  hashtag. Check out even more vibrant rainbow bookshelves when you get a chance!

By Height
Remember back in elementary school when your teacher would ask you to line up in height order? Well this is just like that—but with books! Get creative with it by deciding how you want your height order to go. From tall to shortest across the top shelf? Then from shortest to tallest for the next shelf? Or perhaps the taller books go on the outside and then the shorter fill in the inside part of the shelf. The choice is up to you!

By Genre
Another fun way to classify your books is by genre. When you organize your bookshelf by genre you make it super easy to pick out a book based on the mood that you’re in. Feeling like something otherworldly? Check out your fantasy or sci-fi section! Want to learn about a certain person? Pick from the nonfiction section, or if you’ve gone even further than that, the autobiography section.

By Date
If you want to get more in depth with your bookshelf organizational system, try organizing them chronologically! This way will be more time consuming upfront, since you have to check the inside of the book for the publish date, but it’s an awesomely nerdy way to arrange your shelf. For nonfiction and historical books you can also arrange them by the chronological time the book takes place in, instead of the chronological time it was published.

Now, after you’ve prettied up your bookcase design, are you finding that you still have some leftover books that aren’t fitting into your new design? Then why not keep the aesthetic going and store those extra books somewhere else! An on-demand storage company like  Zippboxx  will drop off bins to your door and transport your books into storage for you. Then, after you’ve read more of your collection and/or donated some of them, you can request that your books be delivered back to you right through a connected device. It’s that easy!
