Apartment Move-Out Cleaning List

The most popular time of year for Americans to move from one residence to another is  between the months of May and September . This time of year is customarily the busiest time for moving because kids are out of school making it easier on families to find the time to pack up and relocate, college students and graduates are either moving back home or into a new place, and the weather is ideal for moving because there is no threat of wintry conditions to worry about. Those getting ready to move do need to worry about thoroughly cleaning their soon-to-be old apartment though.

Upon signing a lease for a new apartment, there are typically two large payments that need to be made. One is an advance rent payment (usually the first and last month’s rent) and the other is the security deposit. Landlords collect security deposits for financial and property protection, and the deposit it is what comes into play when cleaning your apartment for the last time. For example, if any appliances need to be replaced, holes in the wall need to be fixed, toilets need to be scrubbed, or unpaid rent fees need to be resolved, landlords can deduct from what you receive back from your security deposit.

Remove everything from the cabinets, countertops and refrigerator

Clean the inside and outside of the refrigerator, turn off and air out

Clean the inside and outside of your cabinets

Scrub the inside and outside of the oven

If you have one, clean your dishwasher

Sweep behind large appliances

Defrost freezer and clean out

Scrub the faucet and sink

Disinfect all countertops

Scrub the stovetop

Remove belongings from the bathroom, including anything in drawers or in the shower

Clean the inside of the toilet, the outside of the toilet and around the toilet

Scrub the soap scum off of your shower/bath walls and bleach the grout

Wipe down countertop and sink removing any water stains

Get rid of any hair in the shower, sink or littered around

Vacuum exhaust fan if dusty

Clean the bathroom mirror

Empty out and vacuum carpet

Empty out and vacuum carpet

Dust all ledges

Remove cobwebs

Clean all windows

Dust ceiling fixtures

Spackle any holes in the wall

Wipe down doors and door knobs

Vacuum carpeted flooring thoroughly

Wipe down light switches and outlets

Dust all ledges, trimwork and molding

Vacuum any vents that look dirty or dusty

Mop wooden and tiled flooring thoroughly

Dust and vacuum drapes/window treatments

Get rid of marks on the walls with a magic eraser

Thoroughly clean (sweep, vacuum, mop) the areas near doors that lead outside
